Insurance firm investments top RO 903m by Q2 2026

03 October 2026

News

Preliminary data issued by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) showed that total investments by insurance firms operating in the Sultanate of Oman reached approximately RO 903.3 million by the end of the second quarter of 2026, recording growth of 16.2 per cent compared with around RO 777.6 million during the same period in 2025. This reflects the growth in the insurance sector’s investment assets and its role in deploying resources across various investment instruments.

Insurance firms manage their investment portfolios in accordance with the Regulation for the Investment of Assets of Insurance and Takaful Companies, which governs firm investments and sets the requirements and limits applicable to different investment instruments, contributing to risk management and strengthening firms’ financial positions.

The data showed that national insurance firms accounted for around RO 599.5 million of the sector’s total investments, compared with approximately RO 303.8 million held by foreign firms. Investments by national firms therefore represented nearly two-thirds of total sector investments, reflecting their significant presence in the investment activities of Oman’s insurance sector.

The data also showed that the majority of insurance firm investments remained concentrated within Oman. National firms allocated around 80 per cent of their total investments to the local market, compared with around 20 per cent outside Oman. Meanwhile, investments by foreign insurance firms within Oman accounted for approximately 86 per cent of their total investments, reflecting the continued allocation of a substantial share of the sector’s assets to local investment instruments.

Investments by national insurance firms were distributed across several investment instruments. Cash and bank deposits accounted for the largest share at approximately RO 269.2 million, representing nearly 45 per cent of their total investments. Investments in corporate bonds amounted to around RO 87.3 million, while government bonds stood at approximately RO 77.4 million. Investments in listed shares reached around RO 76 million, alongside approximately RO 55.6 million in investment funds and RO 28.9 million in real estate.

At the sector level, investments within Oman grew by approximately 14.7 per cent compared with the second quarter of 2025. Several investment categories recorded notable growth, with investments in investment funds rising by 114.1 per cent, listed shares by 69.5 per cent and corporate bonds by 51.5 per cent. Investments in unlisted shares also increased by 39.9 per cent, while cash and deposits rose by 3.2 per cent. In contrast, investments in government bonds declined by 1.2 per cent and real estate investments fell by 2.2 per cent.

Investments outside Oman also increased by 23.4 per cent compared with the same period in 2025. Overseas investments in corporate bonds rose by 56 per cent, cash and deposits by 24.9 per cent, investment funds by 22.7 per cent and government bonds by 13.3 per cent. Meanwhile, investments in listed shares and loans secured by life insurance policies declined by 28.8 per cent and 19 per cent, respectively.

In terms of investments by firm, the four largest firms accounted for around 44 per cent of the sector’s total investments. Dhofar Insurance recorded total investments of approximately RO 113.3 million, followed by Gulf Insurance Group (Gulf) with around RO 108.2 million and Liva Insurance with approximately RO 101.4 million. Oman Qatar Insurance recorded investments of around RO 76.9 million.

These indicators reflect continued growth in the insurance sector’s investment activity and the diversification of its investment portfolios, alongside the concentration of a substantial share of investments within Oman. This strengthens the role of insurance firms as institutional investors and contributes to directing funds towards a range of investment channels that support economic activity and provide long-term sources of financing.
